Official: 2013 Nissan Altima to feature optional supercharged 2.5-liter hybrid
Filed under: Hybrid, Sedan, Geneva Motor Show, Nissan
Every automaker is intent on downsizing its engines and adding some kind of hybrid component to its vehicles, and Nissan is no different. Today in Japan, Nissan introduced its latest in-house-developed hybrid drive system, comprised of a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine and a compact lithium-ion battery pack. But here's the kicker: it's packing a twin-screw supercharger on top.
According to engineers we spoke with, that means the same output as Nissan's tried-and-true 3.5-liter V6 - somewhere in the neighborhood of 260 horsepower and 250 pound-feet of torque - all while returning fuel economy improvements of up to 10 percent when mated to Nissan's all-new continuously variable transmission (expect more on that later).
Engineers claim that the torque curve of the new supercharged mill is nearly identical to the V6 and that power delivery will be just as seamless as the 3.5-liter. Officially, Nissan says that a model packing the new engine is due to arrive in 2013 in North America, and it's safe to assume that's going to be the next-generation Altima.
Nissan reps confirmed that the combination of superchargers and hybrids will proliferate throughout the automaker's lineup in the coming years, and that's sure to extend to Infiniti, as well. That last bit has us pontificating that the mystery mid-engine Infiniti concept coming to the Geneva Motor Show could be packing a variant of this same mill, but augmented with plug-in tech. We'll find out soon enough...

Photographer's Blog: The MotoGP Championship Trophy
In August of last year I posted a desktop wallpaper on my website of the above image with a bit of information about the championship trophy's creator, GARCIAROJALS Studio in Barcelona. I'd seen the trophy up close for the first time while it was on display in the lobby of the mobile Dorna HQ building that travels to the European rounds. I was very impressed by the workmanship and design. It's quite a beaufitul bit of art, and I was pleased to share the above photo with others who shared that opinion.

MotoGP Testing Restrictions Lifted, Brake Protectors Compulsory As GPC Tweaks MotoGP Rules
The testing limits imposed as a cost-cutting measure in MotoGP have finally been lifted. At the meeting of the Grand Prix Commission in Valencia, MotoGP's rule-making body dropped the rules limiting testing to non-contracted riders outside of MotoGP's official tests, and allowed contracted riders (e.g. any rider currently racing in MotoGP) to ride the bikes at private tests. The GPC accepted the argument put forward by Ducati that testing is already limited by the number of tires available, and that restricting testing to test riders did little to cut costs, as the factory riders were being paid anyway.
That argument was not shared by all the members of the MSMA, though. When asked by MotoMatters.com at Valencia about lifting the test ban, HRC Vice President Shuhei Nakamoto said that the measure would favor European manufacturers who have their bikes, crew and riders already close to the track. For the Japanese manufacturers, they would either have to fly their team personnel and riders to Japan, or their bikes, equipment and Japanese engineers to Europe if they wish to test at European tracks. Lifting the test ban would not cut costs for Honda, Nakamoto said.

2012 MotoGP Silly Season: Bradl Signing Makes 16 Confirmed And 7 Unconfirmed On 2012 Grid
With the signing of Stefan Bradl to LCR Honda, the total number of confirmed riders in MotoGP has now grown to 16, including 12 on factory prototype machines (traditional MotoGP machines from Honda, Yamaha and Ducati) and 4 CRT entries (cheaper entries, mainly based on production engines). With official confirmation of Suzuki's withdrawal still awaiting, though zero chance of them continuing, it looks like 12 is the maximum number of bikes that the factories are willing to supply, with Honda, Ducati and Yamaha all provding 4 each, 2 factory bikes and 2 satellite bikes.
The prospects for the CRT teams are much brighter. With 4 riders already confirmed (Colin Edwards, James Ellison, Ant West and Danilo Petrucci), there could be another 7 CRT bikes on the grid, bringing the total to 23. Those CRT riders could also include a couple of interesting names, with Randy de Puniet being linked to a ride with Aspar after testing the Aprilia RSV4 on Bridgestone tires at Valencia this week. The final rider line up will probably take a few more weeks to shake out, but the MotoGP grid is looking the healthiest it has been for years. The last time there were more than 20 riders on the grid was in 2004.
Here's the latest 2012 MotoGP rider line up, as of November 17th:

Official: Lexus IS F Circuit Club Sport Package comes into focus
Filed under: Aftermarket, Motorsports, Sedan, Performance, Etc., Lexus, Luxury
Lexus has turned its already fast IS F over to the go-fast guys at Toyota Racing Development. The finished product is the IS F Circuit Club Sport, and the sport sedan wears a wide range of aero and mechanical improvements. We've known this model was coming for some time thanks to a 2010 Tokyo Auto Salon concept and details spouted late this summer, but these photos provide our best look yet at this touring-car-like model.
Outside, engineers have fitted the IS F with a new front spoiler, rear diffuser and hood, all of which are fabricated from weight-saving carbon fiber. You may have also noticed the vehicle's sizable rear wing. A performance damper kit is also part of the package, offering buyers two separate settings that independently adjustable compression. The luxury bruiser also comes equipped with lightweight forged aluminum wheels, though magnesium rollers are also available.
Mechanically, the IS F Circuit Club Sport Package utilizes a TRD limited-slip differential as well as a TRD big brake kit. At this point, there's no word on how much the package will cost or when it will be available. We aren't even sure American buyers will be able to sink their teeth into the factory-bred racer, so stay tuned.

UFC 143 in Las Vegas: Featherweights Erik Koch and Dustin Poirier will fight on Super Bowl Weekend. Poirier asked for the bout which will pit two rising stars against each other.
UFC 144 in Japan: Anthony Pettis and Joe Lauzon will meet on Feb. 26. Both lightweights are coming off wins, with Pettis taking out Jeremy Stephens and Lauzon submitting Melvin Guillard.

Beautiful Swooping Landline Phone Is Sadly Foredoomed
If Sebastien Sauvage had designed this in the 1980s, he's be a very rich man
Hands up if you still use a landline telephone. No? Nobody? Ah, there, I see a hand. Well, sir, this post is for you. It’s about the Eclipse, a cordless DECT telephone that looks like a piece of sculpture.
In fact, it was inspired by the old 1970s Sculptura, a rotary dial phone which swooped from base to receiver with a similar looping curve. Unlike the Sculptura, the Eclipse is all cordless, and comes with push-buttons and a screen embedded into its inner side.
When not in use (which is — let’s be honest — most of the time) the Eclipse sits around looking pretty, a toroidal ornament that looks as if it is sinking into your tabletop. If you, like the gentleman with his hand raised (you can put it down now–we’re nearly done) are forced to use a landline telephone, then at least this one is good-looking enough not to embarrass you. Or at least it would be, if the designer Sebastien Sauvage could get anyone to manufacture it. Given that nobody buys them anymore, though, this is likely to remain a concept.
