Video: Scandinavian homemade dyno is dangerously awesome

Home-built dyno is dangerously awesome - Click above to watch video after the jump

Tuning an engine can be a delicate procedure. There is a lot of time and patience required to dial things in just right. You can spend hours and big dollars adjusting parameters on an expensive professional dynamometer -or you can be a crafty Scandinavian and homebrew a dyno right in your yard.

Apparently, all it takes is the rear end from a heavy-duty truck, some straps and a quick skaal to Odin. The result is a snowed-in dyno that can tune all the V8-engine-swapped drift machines in the neighborhood. Click past the jump to watch ingenuity at work.

Report: Used car prices highest in 16 years, but might not stay that way

Car buyers

If you're looking to purchase a used car or truck, you may have noticed that the prices have been a bit higher than you may have expected. Maybe the salesman in the used car lot isn't willing to dicker as much as you may have expected. According to USA Today, the reason for this phenomenon is that pre-owned vehicle prices are at a 16-year high.

The national paper claims that the average transaction price for a used vehicle is $11,660; up 30 percent since 2008. If that total still seems palatable, consider that four-year-old Honda Accord sedans are selling for $16,175, or about $373 per month with the typical four-year loan and five percent interest. While it's not the same as buying, USA Today notes that a brand-new Accord can lease for about $250 plus taxes, title and plates.

And while we're on the subject of leasing, the U.S. recession and the sharp decrease in leasing has helped cut down on the used vehicles available, further depleting stock while demand remains strong. The price hikes are also being felt at the auction houses, where prices have soared to levels not seen in over a decade. Owners are keeping their vehicles longer as well, as the typical vehicle is now 10.6 year old, up from 9.8 years in 2007.

But while the used vehicle market is strong, many feel that the trend can't last forever. Car buyers are leasing more now. 21 percent of all vehicles moved off of new car lots are being leased - up from 11 percent in 2009. That means more vehicles will become available once those leases run their course. Credit has loosened a bit as well, so potential new car buyers with less-than-perfect credit are now more likely to find themselves in a new vehicle.

Red Bull revises pitstop procedures

Red Bull Racing has revised its pitstop procedures ahead of the Monaco Grand Prix, after rival Ferrari shadowed its moves in Spain last weekend. Mark Webber got trapped behind Fernando Alonso for much of the race in Barcelona - and was unable to jump the Ferrari through strategy after the Italian team called its Spanish driver in every time Webber headed for the pits. Ferrari's efficiency in copying Red Bull Racing's tactics prompted wild claims from Red Bull's motor sport advisor Helmut Marko that its Maranello-based team was spying on it by hacking its team radio.

Report: Why U-Haul won't rent you a trailer for your Ford Explorer

2011 Ford Explorer
2011 Ford Explorer - Click above for high-res image gallery

If you are a Ford Explorer owner who may need to infrequently tow small loads, here's a Public Service Announcement that may be of interest. Apparently, U-Haul, which we'd guess is the first name that pops in people's minds when the subject of a rental trailer comes up, will not loan trailers out if the lender plans on hooking it up to a Ford Explorer, regardless of the vehicle's tow rating.

According to a spokesperson for U-Haul that spoke to Consumer Reports, it's company policy to deny trailer rentals to Explorer owners. Why? Lawyers. Says Joanne Fried, director of media and corporate relations, "Every time we go to hire an attorney to defend a lawsuit, as soon as we say 'Ford Explorer,' they charge us more money."

The issue can be traced all the way back to the Firestone tire debacle that tarnished the Explorer's good name in the late 1990s. Though the original lawsuit has long since been settled and, more importantly, the current Explorer shares absolutely nothing but its moniker with the old truck-based model cited in the lawsuit, the name 'Explorer' is still enough to incite bouts of panic, sleepless nights and a bucket full of dollar signs to U-Haul's legal team.

The corporate edict also applies to the Jeep Wrangler, unless the owner agrees only to tow the U-Haul trailer only when a hardtop is in place on the iconic off-roader. Seems more than a little arbitrary and ignorant to us, but we're not the ones with law degrees, so what do we know?

Valentino Rossi was delighted with his first impression of the Silverstone grand prix track after riding it on a roadgoing Ducati during the launch of the circuit's new 'wing' paddock complex today. Of the multiple sacred laws of hot rodding, "Thou shall put big engines in small cars" is by far our favorite. This line of thinking spans cultures and has led to the creation of many a magnificent machine. Machines like this Saab 9-3 Sport Combi with a kicking V10 sourced from the mighty Dodge Viper under its hood. This thing puts a whole new spin on the term "sport wagon." As you might imagine, shoving a longitudinally mounted lump of American engineering into the engine bay of a small Swedish long roof required significant re-engineering of the 9-3 body structure, including fabricating an entirely new transmission tunnel.

With that big lump situated behind the front axle and a set of stoppers lifted from the big snake as well, we have to imagine that this beast is an absolute terror on the track. Who do we have to bribe for a little seat time? Check out the full build over in Zatzy forums thanks to contributor mrspringer.

Neuville extends Tour de Corse lead

Peugeot Belgium driver Thierry Neuville extended his lead of the Tour de Corse with two more fastest stage times, as he came even closer to becoming the youngest-ever winner of an IRC round. Neuville struggled with suspension settings that were not to his liking in the morning, but made the car stiffer during service at lunchtime and found that his 207 was much easier to drive in the afternoon.

2011 Volkswagen Golf Cabriolet ? First Drive Review

We slide behind the wheel of the likable?and Euro-only?reborn Golf Cab. When it comes to convertible roofs, most enthusiasts agree on the ragtop?s superiority: they?re lighter and they take up less room when stowed. More subjectively, they often look better when raised, and a fabric roof evokes nostalgic memories of classic roadsters and droptops. Of [...]

Vergne leads Monza practice

Fresh from his maiden 2011 Formula 3.5 victory at Spa-Francorchamps a fortnight ago, Jean-Eric Vergne emerged fastest in the opening free practice session at Monza this morning. The final nine minutes of the 45-minute session were lost because of a fire on the circuit that brought out the red flags. The fire was understood to have been started by a cigarette and no cars were involved

Rossi Claims Stoner "Obstructed" Him At Estoril Test

There was clearly something very nasty in the water at Estoril. For almost as soon as the riders rolled into the paddock in Portugal, the atmosphere soured badly, with verbal sparring matches breaking out between Valentino Rossi and Casey Stoner, and Jorge Lorenzo and Marco Simoncelli. Rossi and Stoner clashed over the crash at Jerez, when the Italian accidentally took out the Honda man in a crash at turn 1. Lorenzo and Simoncelli, in turn, clashed over Lorenzo's accusations that Simoncelli was a dangerous rider, a claim refuted by the Gresini Honda rider.

It now appears that at least one of the feuds is continuing to simmer on. According to reports from the Italian broadcaster Sportmediaset - and confirmed by the Italian sports daily Gazzetta dello Sport - Valentino Rossi has claimed that Casey Stoner attempted to block the Italian while the pair of them were riding during the official MotoGP test on the Monday after the Estoril round.

Engelhart Strikes First in Season 2

The cars and stars of the NASCAR iRacing.com Tour Modified season embarked on their fourth season of online racing this past week as they made the haul to the virtual Toyota Speedway at Irwindale, California. With most of the veterans looking to rekindle past glory and a mix of newcomers looking to make a splash, the series saw a growth spurt at Irwindale with 173 drivers taking part in twenty official races. Those sim racers who took part came from around the globe and featured all different skill levels ? including one newly-crowned Pro Series driver! Veteran Herbert Engelhart ended the last quarter strong by winning the week at Thompson International Speedway en route to a fourth place finish in the points. Engelhart kept that momentum rolling into 2011 Season [...]

Kovalainen pins hopes on Spain upgrade

Heikki Kovalainen is hopeful the upgrade to be introduced by Lotus in the next race will help the team get into Q2, after just missing out in Turkey on Saturday. Kovalainen qualified in 18th position, around half a second behind his closest rival and less than two seconds off the fastest time in Q1. With the team introducing a significant upgrade package in Spain in two weeks, Kovalainen is hoping Lotus will be able to reduce the gap even more then.

BMW 3 Series GT shakes its rump

BMW 3 Series GT spy shots
BMW 3 Series GT spy shots - Click above for high-res image gallery

Good as it may be to drive, and better as it may be to ride in, we still don't quite understand the BMW 5 Series Gran Turismo. It isn't as hunkered down and svelte as a Porsche Panamera or Audi A7 Sportback, and its big booty style isn't exactly the most attractive thing to come out of Munich.

And now there's a smaller one to look forward to.

In addition to a sedan, coupe, convertible and wagon, the next-generation BMW 3 Series will be offered in hunchbacked Gran Turismo form, seen here all covered up in swirly camouflage. Our sources indicate that the 3GT will have a different front fascia than the rest of the 3 Series lineup, as well as a unique roofline and a frameless window design.

Expect engine choices to be the same as the rest of the 3 Series lineup, with turbocharged four- and six-cylinder powerplants across the range. No word on when the 3GT will bow (or if it's destined for consumption here in the States, where the 5GT hasn't exactly been lighting the sales charts afire), but our spies suggest that BMW's new genre-bender will launch one year after the 3 Series Touring, another bodystyle we're not sure is coming to North America.
