Indian Produces First Motorcycle Under Polaris Ownership

Indian Motorcycle has released some photos of the first 2012 Indian Chief to roll out of the company’sSpirit Lake, Iowa plant — the first motorcycle to be produced by the oldest American motorcycle company since its acquisition by Polaris. Nicknamed the “Polaris-Indian Bike #1,” the new Chief is not terribly different from the 2011 Indian Chiefs built under the old regieme, but it does symbolize the next chapter in the iconic company’s history. Two separate DRS zones for Monza

The FIA is to use two independent DRS zones for the first time at the forthcoming Italian Grand Prix. At most venues this year there has been only one zone in which the overtaking device can be deployed during races, but in Montreal and Valencia two areas were set up. At those events the two DRS zones were on consecutive straights, but with a single detection point allowing drivers to trigger their wing flap for both

Help Hyundai build the 2012 Azera by... building a 2012 Azera

hyundai azera configurator screenshot

Hyundai is almost ready to sell you a 2012 Azera. Before it does that, however, it needs your help. The Korean automaker has posted a link that leads you to a configurator for the 2012 Azera, and there is a survey posted at the end. The configurator will give you a good idea of how much the Azera will end up costing, as well as what color choices will be made available.

We built our own 2012 Azera, and think it looks mighty fine in Smoke Gray Metallic with a Graphite Black leather interior. Checking the box for the Premium Package, our prototype Azera would cost us around $36,000.

Check out the configurator for yourself by clicking here, and be sure to answer the survey at the end. Maybe your decisions will help dictate what type of car we see when the Azera is revealed at the 2011 Los Angeles Auto Show.

Button: Vettel can still be stopped

Jenson Button believes that the Formula 1 title battle could be turned on its head if Sebastian Vettel's rivals can knock the German off the front row of the grid. With several drivers, including Red Bull Racing's own Mark Webber, believing that Vettel's period of early-season dominance is now over, Button sees reasons to keep the belief that the title is not yet in the German's hands.

I was cleaning out my office a few days ago and under the mounds of paperwork an old memory was revived. I found my collection of old racing games and simulators from years ago. I flipped through the pages of some of the manuals and read the system requirements and kind of chuckled. Back in the day, 16MB of ram and a 1MB video card were considered state of the art, and hooking a steering wheel to the computer made your house the local hangout for everyone. Then, I got to the back of some of these manuals and started reading the credits. Some of the names from 15 years ago are still involved in sim racing development. Ironically, I thought of the idea for this article before the release [...]

Official: Ferrari drops the top, full specs on new 458 Spider [w/video]

Ferrari 458 Spider

Earlier this morning, we showed you the first video of the coming Ferrari 458 Spider, but now we have a batch of images and more information to share with you.

Engineering a mid-engined exotic with a retractable hardtop is a bit tricky. Which is why it's never been done before - that is, until now. Feast your eyes on what Maranello's crafty engineers have wrought.

The convertible version of the 458 Italia fills the space left by the F430 Spider and the 360, 355 and 348 Spiders before it. But whereas those went with cloth roofs, the newest variation on the theme uses a folding - or more accurately, flipping - hard panel. The mechanism is similar to the one on the Superamerica, but whereas that model's roof panel simply rests under the open sky on the rear deck, the 458 stows under the deck lid, protecting it from collecting dust or rain that would otherwise be deposited on the driver and passenger when deployed.

The function is simpler than most folding contraptions and resulting form is more pleasing to the eye as well, but the one disadvantage is that the 4.5-liter direct-injection V8 (with all its 562 prancing horses and trademark crackled red cam cover) is now hidden below decks instead of displayed as on the 458 Italia coupe. Which only goes to show that while you can come close to having your proverbial cake and eating it too, even this level of performance roadster has its trade-offs. This, though, strikes us as one we could live with. You know, if we really had to.

Follow the jump for the video and full press release, and be sure to scope out the initial batch of high-resolution images in the gallery as we gear up for the 458 Spider's debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show just a few weeks from now.

One Giant Leap

For the first time this season, the NASCAR iRacing Class A Series turned both left and right, in their trip to Watkins Glen. History tells us the road courses are usually a slow week for the primarily oval division, however, history led us astray this time as the big names were out and the points totals were high for Week 2 of 2011 Season 3. Street Stock champion Nick Ottinger made the (giant) leap up to the top oval car, and handled it masterfully as he won both his starts, and took top honors for the week. Ottinger’s 284 points are unprecedented for a road coarse event for the Impala series, but he was not the only sim racer who came out of New York with a smile. Fellow NASCAR [...]

Haug concedes Mercedes needs time

Mercedes-Benz motorsport boss Norbert Haug says the team needs to accept the fact that it will take time before it can challenge for championship glory after two difficult seasons. "Compared to Red Bull, it took five years to build up that system and the first race was won by Sebastian Vettel in a Toro Rosso, which is a similar car," Haug told AUTOSPORT. "With all respect and credit to them, it has taken time

The Champion and the Apprentice

The Fiat Yamaha team have been surrounded by hype this past few weeks. Not, as an outsider might expect, caused by a battle to re-sign the reigning champion: Rossi’s contract ends at the end of the 2010 championship, and he looks settled, happy, and at one with the bike he helped shape and tune into [...]

New 1962 Volkswagen T1 Camper Van Kit from Lego is Our Kind of Magic Bus

There isn?t a lot we can say about the latest scale creation from Lego that the 1962 VW camper van kit can?t express on its own. The thing is simply amazing, and features a depth of detail we didn?t think was possible for a Lego construction of this scale (the bus is about a foot [...]

2011 Concorso Italiano

Concorso Italiano is a celebration of all things Italian. That means plenty of amazing cars, delicious food and drink, and good music. It's mostly about the cars, though. Ferrari and Lamborghini dominated the lawn, but spectators are also able to enjoy dozens of Maseratis, De Tomasos, Alfa Romeos and Fiats.

Previous years of Concorso Italiano saw several changes of venue, but 2011 marked the third year that the show was hosted at the Laguna Seca Golf Ranch. That stability seems to have helped the event, and the organizers have started to figure out how to make things run smoothly. Parking was a breeze (for us, at least), and the organization of the cars was the best it's been in several years.

The last two years of Concorso have featured gatherings of Ferrari supercars - 288 GTO in 2009 and F40 in 2010 - and this year an F50 reunion was announced. Unfortunately only three cars were in attendance, although one was the ultra-rare F50 GT.

Other features of this year's Concorso Italiano included the 40th anniversary of the De Tomaso Pantera and a collection of original-condition and barn-find cars, our favorite being an aluminum-bodied 1966 Ferrari 275 GTB still in the same condition it was found after being stored since the early 1970s.

You can see those cars and more in our high-res gallery above.

Rider Media Training Wins The Day

From the Berkeley PR Blog: an interesting PR take on the way MotoGP riders handled the Japanese GP questions at Brno. Following flat refusals to attend the GP a few weeks ago, the rider’s positions have softened as contractual realities have bitten, and the Dorna report on the radiation levels in Japan has been issued. Ducati Building Aluminium Chassis As Parallel Project

Ever since Valentino Rossi ended the first Valencia MotoGP test in lowly 15th place on the Ducati Desmosedici, one-and-three-quarter seconds behind fastest man and former teammate Jorge Lorenzo, there have been calls for radical changes to Ducati's MotoGP machine. Those calls have only intensified as the season has progressed, the switch from the GP11 to the GP11.1, the destroked version of Ducati's 2012 MotoGP machine, having brought little improvement until a few key parts were introduced at Brno.

The focus of much of the fans' anger and the paddock's scepticism has been Ducati's monocoque carbon fiber chassis. Ducati's radically different design has been pinpointed as the obvious culprit for the problems with the Desmosedici, with critics pointing to the success the Japanese factories have had with an aluminium twin spar chassis, as exemplified by Yamaha's Deltabox concept. If Ducati had an aluminium twin spar frame, the argument goes, they would at least be confronting the Japanese on equal footing.

Crucially, the criticism has come not just from outside of Ducati, but both Valentino Rossi and his long-time crew chief Jeremy Burgess as well. Both Rossi and his crew chief have called for Ducati to run a parallel project to design an aluminium chassis to test whether such a chassis would bring an improvement. By running two different projects in parallel, the argument runs, the pace of development of the Desmosedici could greatly increased as the data from the two projects is analyzed.

IndyCar delays aero kits until 2013

The IndyCar Series will delay the introduction of alternative aero kits for its next-generation IZOD Dallara chassis until the start of the 2013 season, CEO Randy Bernard announced on Sunday. The concept of new chassis, which was given its maiden test run at Mid-Ohio one week ago, included the provision to use different aero kits during the season.

Power slides again in Rankings

Will Power may have closed the gap to championship leader Dario Franchitti at New Hampshire, but he couldn't prevent a fall down the Castrol EDGE Rankings for a second consecutive week. The Australian finished fifth in a farcical end to the race, with stewards deciding to restart despite wet and largely undriveable conditions. The result saw him close to within 50 points of Dario Franchitti in the championship, the Scot having earlier crashed from the lead on lap 118

Honda wants ?12 riders decision by Indy

Honda racing boss Shuhei Nakamoto says a decision on the future of Marco Simoncelli and Andrea Dovizioso is set to be made by the next race in Indianapolis. Nakamoto had said last month that Honda was set to reduce its budget for next year, meaning the Japanese manufacturer is likely to have just two works bikes in 2012. He said only Dani Pedrosa and Casey Stoner were likely to get works rides
