2011 Season Kicks Off

Qatar in March is an oddity. A race in the cooler evening air, floodlit. If that’s not different enough for you, throw in a covering of sand which makes any excursion from the thin, black racing line an adventure in optimism or blind faith depending on the rider. So Qatar is not a good race [...]

Class A Wine

For the second season in a row, the NASCAR iRacing Class A Series made a trip to “Wine Country” for a visit to the tricky Infineon Raceway. This ten turn, two mile raceway in Sonoma, California presents many challenges for its competitors. A technical uphill section combined with a blistering fast downhill section never allows drivers to let their guard down. While most sim racers were not up to the challenge, fifty-seven competed in races throughout the week, which is about the same amount that took to the track here last season. Roland Ehnstrm, the Scandinavian who has been impressive on ovals, showed he also had what it takes to conquer the tricky road out west. Ehnstrm grabbed top honors for his 224 point win over Scott Heckert, leading 53 [...]

Vettel not thinking of title yet

Sebastian Vettel insists he is not looking at the championship table yet, despite his huge advantage after his victory in Valencia. The world champion scored his sixth win in eight races on Sunday, extending his lead in the championship over Mark Webber and Jenson Button to 77 points. The gap means Vettel would still lead the championship even if he missed the next three races

Official: Saab secures $36M bridge loan from Gemini Investment Fund

Saab logoDuring the U.S. launch of the 2012 9-4X, Saab CEO Victor Muller told us that he was good at raising money, and he is probably going further than he ever wished to prove his point. It was announced this morning that Swedish Automobile, parent company of Saab, secured a €25-million ($36M U.S.) bridge loan from Gemini Investment Fund. It is the second infusion from Gemini in as many months, and brings to €66M ($95M) the amount of money Saab has raised this week alone.

The latest life preserver allows Saab to pay its June wages. The production lines are still idle while Saab deals with suppliers, but it wants to start making cars again in two weeks. Saab is also waiting on regulatory approval for €245 million ($353M) from two Chinese partners, and hopes to access a drawdown of €29.1 million ($42M) from the European Investment Bank in hopes of manifesting a Rocky-like comeback.

Bianchi among feature race penalties

Jules Bianchi's nightmare GP2 season has taken another hit after the Frenchman was one of four drivers given 10-place grid penalties for the sprint race in Valencia. ART driver Bianchi retired from the race at the start following a high-speed collision with Marcus Ericsson. Race officials deemed that the incident was Bianchi's fault after he swerved across from the outside of the track into the path of Ericsson in the sweeping first corner

2012 Chevrolet Camaro Transformers Edition ready to hit the street

The next installment in the Transformers franchise is set to hit theaters on Tuesday, June 28. Transformers 3: Dark of the Moon will continue the trend of providing a massive stage on which to showcase General Motors vehicles. One of those vehicles in the Michael Bay explosion-fest is a yellow Chevrolet Camaro that goes by the name Bumblebee, and the banana-and-black Autobot is set to spawn a special edition automobile that fans can put in their driveway.

It's called the 2012 Transformers Special Edition Camaro, and you can order one starting in July. If you do so, your Bumblebee decoy will arrive on dealer lots sometime this fall. The Transformers Camaro wears Autobot badges on the fenders, black stripes down the hood, roof and tail, a Bumblebee-specific rear spoiler and blacked-out 20-inch alloys sporting Autobot-logo center caps. Dealers will also be able to offer and install a ground-effects package and a set of 21-inch wheels so that customers can more closely mimic the on-screen Camaro.

The interior of the 2012 Transformers Special Edition Camaro also gets unique accents. Black leather surfaces are contrasted with yellow stitching, while Autobot logos can be seen on the headrests and center console lid.

Interested in picking one up? You'll have to start with either a 2LT or 2SS Camaro that's already wearing the RS appearance package. Tack on another $3,000, and you can drive like Shia Labeouf every day.

Sebastian Vettel's 2011 qualifying tally now stands at seven poles from eight grands prix, as the world champion took his 22nd Formula 1 career pole in Valencia. Button: No McLaren talks yet

Jenson Button says that talks have not yet begun with McLaren about extending his contract at the team. AUTOSPORT reported earlier this week that McLaren is set to reward Button with a fresh contract by taking up an option it has on the Briton for next year - and offer him improved terms in likely exchange for a longer deal that could tie him down for the next few seasons. And although there seems little doubt that Button will remain at the team in 2012, he made it clear in Valencia ahead of the European Grand Prix that the matter was not sorted yet ? and that he may not want too long a deal

Europe Sunday quotes: Pirelli

Paul Hembery: "This certainly wasn't a vintage race of the sort that we saw in Canada, Monaco and China this year for example. Again we saw an interesting mix of strategies although it was clear that a three-stopper was the way to go, with the faster cars able to exploit the performance advantage of the PZero Yellow tyres to the maximum in these conditions. "Next up is Silverstone, when we get back to a permanent high-speed circuit, which should provide us with plenty of action once more at the front of the field."

2011 Pikes Peak Hill Climb, Practice Day 1 in the books

Filed under:

2011 Pikes Peak International Hill Climb
2011 Pikes Peak International Hill Climb Practice Day 1 - Click above for high-res image gallery

The 89th-annual Pikes Peak International Hill Climb kicked things off early today with the first practice runs on the mountain. We'll be following the Unlimited Class, whose drivers will be contesting for the overall victory and the elusive ten-minute mark, and this morning they took on the middle portion of the course for the first of three practice sessions. This section is completely paved, but is one of the most difficult due to the high number of sharp switchbacks and extreme elevation change. It also makes for some picturesque views, as evidenced by the photos in the included image gallery.

Things are looking promising for the main contenders, particularly with Rhys Millen who looked incredibly fast and didn't seem to be suffering any of the problems that he dealt with last year. "I think we just went about a second and a half faster than last year [in the section], and overall I'm really happy," he told us. "We still have some oddities with the shift linkage, but it's our first time trying the manual shifter this year. Other than that the car is rock solid and I'm really happy."

Paul Dallenbach was also extremely happy with his new twin-turbo engine courtesy of Banks Power. "The new engine is great," he said. "With the two turbos on there I'm not lacking for any horsepower." We did notice he seemed to be struggling for traction, and we asked him if he had perhaps overdone it with more than 1,300 horsepower on tap. "I don't want to say too much power because I've been up here for so many years with not enough," he joked. "So, no, I don't think there's too much power."

The other big story of the day was the return of Rod Millen to Pikes Peak, who raced on the mountain for the first time in more than a decade. He seemed to be enjoying driving Rhys' Hyundai Genesis drift car and looks to be the man to beat in the 2WD Time Attack class. "It's fun, I'm really enjoying it," he said about driving the car. "Now I just have to keep the thing straight. I guess that its daily job is to drift."

We'll be bringing you more live coverage of the 2011 Pikes Peak Hill Climb throughout the rest of this week, so be sure to check back over the next few days for more reports and photos. Until then, browse through our photos of the first practice session in our high-res image gallery.

Single DRS detection point to remain

The FIA is to stick with a single detection area for the two DRS zones at this weekend's European Grand Prix, following a successful debut for the concept in Canada last weekend. With the DRS having been used in two areas in Montreal, the FIA has confirmed that it plans to have a similar double concept again in Spain - although it will not be used along the start-finish straight. The first zone in Valencia will run from 285 metres after Turn 10, with the second zone starting 35 metres after Turn 14.

Report: Ford talks Sync tweaks, adding airbag seatbelts to more models

Ford Dash witn Sync and MyFord Touch

Ford says that it's in the process of responding to customers who feel that the company's Sync and MyFord Touch systems are cumbersome or difficult to use. According to the Detroit Free Press, the company's internal quality evaluations have discovered a few issues. While speaking to reporters, Mark Fields, Ford's President of the Americas, said that the automaker is committed to improving the connectivity options in its vehicles, adding that by and large, customers enjoy the features. So far, it's unclear exactly what changes Ford will make to Sync and MyFord Touch/My Lincoln Touch moving forward, but we'd wager that software engineers will focus on further improving the software's voice-recognition system, though many Autoblog staffers hope they also reevaluate MyFord Touch's control scheme.

Fields also made it clear that the Blue Oval plans to expand its Sync AppLink service to the 2012 Fusion, F-Series, Expedition and even the Mustang. Currently, the $395 option is only available on the Fiesta, and it allows buyers to download various smartphone applications straight to their vehicle.

Finally, the Dearborn-based automaker said that we can also expect to see more seatbelts with integrated airbags crop up across is Ford and Lincoln lines. Right now, the safety device is only an option on the 2011 Ford Explorer.

MotoGP: Ducati Racing with 2012 Chassis Starting at Assen

Ducati Corse continues to battle a war on two-fronts: both by trying to market itself out of an otherwise disastorous MotoGP season, and also to rapidly develop and search for answers to the lackluster Ducati Desmosedici GP11. The latest news out of Bologna now leans more towards this latter effort (or is it the prior?), as Ducati Corse has announced that it will bring a version of its 2012 chassis to Assen for Valentino Rossi ...

Unsafe at Any Price: Collecting the Chevrolet Chevette and Ford Pinto

When shaggy old cars go from the pound to the endangered-species list, they can achieve a sort of contrarian collectibility. Vehicles that disappear do so for (mostly) good reasons, but if ?you?ve got about $1000 burning a hole in your pocket, head to Craigslist and show people that you don?t care what you drive. 1976?87 [...]

Report: Goodwood heading to China?

Goodwood Festival of Speed

Auto shows are generally defined by their location: Detroit, Los Angeles, Geneva, Frankfurt, Tokyo.... Moving a show from one city to another, then, wouldn't fly. But Goodwood is different.

The Festival of Speed is called the Moving Motor Show because it displays cars in motion, but the whole show could be moving itself if the latest reports come to fruition. Word has it that Lord Charles Gordon-Lennox, the Earl of March who organizes the Festival of Speed and the Goodwood Revival is in discussions with organizers in China about replicating the legendary British event in the People's Republic.

Lord March reportedly visited China recently, and will be accepting a delegation of government representatives and automakers from the populous country at the Festival later this month.

FIA finalises British GP diffuser ban

Formula 1's ban on the off-throttle use of blown diffusers will definitely come into force at the British Grand Prix, AUTOSPORT can reveal, after the details were finalised by technical chiefs and the FIA on Thursday. Just days after FIA technical delegate Charlie Whiting wrote to the teams to make it clear that he was determined to push through the ban, the matter was discussed in detail by F1 thinktank - the Technical Working Group Although no official statement has been made about the outcome of the meeting, sources have revealed to AUTOSPORT that the FIA saw no reason to postpone its intended ban any further than Silverstone, having delayed its original start date of the Spanish Grand Prix because of what it feared would be 'unintended consequences' for teams.

Haryanto claims first Auto GP pole

DAMS driver Rio Haryanto secured his first series pole position in qualifying for the Auto GP races at Brno. Haryanto, who made his debut in the series this year at the first event at Monza, set a fastest lap of 1m42.985s - just over five hundredths of a second faster than long-time session leader Luca Filippi's 1m43.040s. In an attempt to leapfrog the series debutant in the closing moments of qualifying, Filippi pushed too much on his final run, ran wide at Turn 6 and spun his Super Nova Racing entry out of contention.
