Kobayashi: Sauber had pace for Q2

Kamui Kobayashi is adamant that his Sauber had enough pace to make it into Q2 after a disappointing qualifying for the Japanese. The Sauber driver was unable to make the cut to go into Q2 after struggling with tyre warm-up issues, finishing down in 18th position. Kobayashi is optimistic, however, that his race pace will be better.

Seven-time World Rally champion Sebastien Loeb is launching his own sportscar team, with entries in the Le Mans Series and France's Porsche Cup planned for 2012, and says the project will be his post-rallying future. Pirelli predicts intriguing qualifying

Pirelli director of motorsport Paul Hembery thinks teams are going to face an 'interesting challenge' with tyre strategies in qualifying because of the big time difference between the two compounds. The Italian tyre maker has brought the soft and the hard compound for the inaugural event in India, and early data has suggested that there could be as big a gap as two seconds per lap in pace disparity between the two types of tyre. Such a time difference could force even the fastest of teams to use up a valuable set of soft rubber in Q1 - which could leave them unable to save new sets for the race, but also make it harder for teams at the back of the grid to get within the mandatory 107 per cent limit

Report: One-third of red light camera violators in LA opting not to pay voluntary citations

Filed under:

red light camera
Red light traffic cameras can be a real pain in the butt. The fines can be outrageous, the points lead to higher insurance rates and the programs can even take hard-working police officers off the streets. But what happens if you simply throw the ticket in the trash? In Los Angeles County, the answer seems to be a whole lot of nothing.

The Newspaper reports that red light camera revenue is down by one third after LA Police Commissioner Alan Skoban called the cameras "a voluntary citation program" back on June 7. The cameras have already been shut down in Los Angeles, but surrounding cities are losing boat-loads of dough. Since that June announcement, photo enforcement vendors are reportedly losing $1 million per month.

Still, while red light camera tickets are down, they're certainly not out. Drivers still paid 25,693 tickets at nearly $500 a pop from May through September. That's nearly $30 million over the course of a full year, which gets split between municipalities and the traffic camera system companies.

We're not sure what is more noteworthy - red light cameras that dole out $500 tickets, or ticked motorists that continue to pay outrageous fines even though the program is "voluntary." It appears the moral fiber of this country is still high... or not enough motorists know that the tickets don't have to be paid.

Menu takes commanding opening win

Alain Menu secured a commanding win in the WTCC's opening race at Suzuka. The Swiss driver's pole position kept him clear of a chaotic run to the first corner, which removed the Chevrolet's biggest threat in the form of Robert Dahlgren's Volvo, and then capitalised on team-mate running Yvan Muller running wide through Turn 7 a few laps later to secure complete control of the race. He crossed the line more than three seconds ahead of fellow Chevy racer Rob Huff, while SUNRED's Michel Nykjaer was able to keep Muller at bay to claim third outright in his independent SEAT.

Report: Marchionne aims Maserati at Porsche and Bentley

Filed under:

Expanding an automotive empire is tricky business. You can either pit one brand within the group against another, or you have to differentiate them significantly. Volkswagen has opted for the former, with numerous competitors from different group brands in the same segments, but the Fiat/Chrysler group over which Sergio Marchionne presides is going the other route.

As a result, Marchionne insists that Ferrari isn't after the same market that the likes of Porsche and Bentley - both part of the Volkswagen group - currently pursue. Ferrari, he says, is in a league of its own, but in fact it plays against the likes of Lamborghini and Bugatti. So what is Marchionne pitting against Porsche and Bentley? Maserati.

Reiterating that Ferrari will never build an SUV or a four-door sedan, Marchionne points to Maserati to fill those niches. In order to get there, as we know, the Trident marque is launching a pair of sedans - one larger and one smaller - to succeed the current Quattroporte, and the SUV currently known as the Kubang, previewed in concept form at the Frankfurt show last month.

Together with the GranTurismo range - the convertible version of which Marchionne is pictured with above - the new models are pegged to boost Maserati's sales up tenfold over the course of the coming years, from the 5,675 units it sold last year up to 55,000 or even 60,000 units. Ferrari's sales, meanwhile, will be limited to 10,000 units from the 6,573 it sold last year in markets around the world.

Lamborghini Sesto Elemento

Demand for supercars in India has exotic automakers scrambling, with Lamborghini on the verge of opening its second dealership in India this year, and Ferrari planning to open four more by the end of 2012.

Ferrari opened its first Indian dealership in May as the country's blossoming economy continues to spit out millionaires left and right. The number of India's millionaires is expected to double by 2015.

Despite climbing numbers of millionaires and increased demand for exotic rides, a chilling fact remains: World Bank estimates that 75 percent of Indians live on less than $2 a day.

Hoping to limit the tandem style of drafting that has prevailed at Daytona and Talladega this year, NASCAR issued a new restrictor-plate for this weekend's race, with an increase of 1/64th of an inch in the diameter of the plate holes which gives around a seven to 10 horsepower boost. Additionally a new calibration for the pop-off valve that controls maximum pressure in the radiator was also set in order to try to prevent drivers from pushing each other for as long as they have done in previous restrictor-plate races this year

FIA in engine-mapping clampdown

Formula 1 teams have been told that there will be stricter limitations on engine mapping next year, as part of a clampdown by the FIA to prevent teams exploiting exhausts gases. Although moves to outlaw blown diffusers have already resulted in teams being forced to run with periscope exhausts in 2012, there have been mounting concerns that some outfits are still trying to exploit loopholes in this area of the regulations. Earlier this week, Mercedes GP team principal Ross Brawn voiced his fears on the matter - especially because it had become clear to everyone this year just what benefit can be had from using exhaust gases for improved aerodynamic performance

Newey not ruling out new parts in 2011

Adrian Newey has not ruled out introducing new developments to Red Bull's RB7 chassis before the end of the season, but only if there is no risk of giving away the team's 2012 design secrets to rival teams. Newey, whose RB6 and RB7 designs have scooped up the last two drivers' and constructors' world titles with Sebastian Vettel, insisted that all focus is now going into the new RB8 project which he said would likely be influenced by the change in blown diffuser regulations for next year. "All our research is on next year, but if we find something that comes out of that in regards to this year's car we may choose to do so depending on whether it could give the game away," he said at the team's headquarters during its world title media event in Milton Keynes.

Kline Upends Field at USA

While Brandon Salvatore continued to add to his point total in the NASCAR iRacing.com Tour Modified Series (NiTMS) on Week Ten, it was veteran sim racer Shane Kline who showed the way in Round Ten. The Untamed Motorsports driver captured the top split race of the week at the USA International Speedway to take the overall win for the week. Kline took the win in Saturday’s 3476 Strength of Field affair by just over one second. Kevin Walker came home as the runner-up, edging-out Derrick Cormier2, Carl Sundberg and Mitch Miller. Kline led 90 laps en route to the win. The race featured just a single caution period and just two lead changes between Kline, who started on the pole, and Walker. Kline gained 217 points for the win. Though [...]

Find of the Day: Jacques Villeneuve's 1997 title-prize Hennessey Viper Venom

Villeneuve's Viper Venom

Say what you will about what he's done since, but nobody was as hot a talent as Jacques Villeneuve in the mid '90s. The French Canadian driver - and son of Gilles Villeneuve, who died while racing for Scuderia Ferrari - won both the Indy 500 and the IndyCar title in only his second season in the series. Then he moved up to Formula One and repeated the feat by taking the championship in only his second season, having only lost out to his Williams teammate Damon Hill the season before.

The 1997 world championship was nothing short of epic, pitting the newbie against Michael Schumacher in a battle that came down to the last race and saw Schumi disqualified from the standings for some questionable driving tactics. Needless to say, Williams was elated at securing what would, unfortunately, be the end of its dominant winning streak. And so were their sponsors. So much so, in fact, that Rothmans - the tobacco brand that was the team's title sponsor - gave Jacques the very special gift you see here.

What might look like an ordinary Viper, in fact, packs some serious Venom - modified by Hennessey to the tune of over 600 horsepower, and decked out in Rothmans racing stripes to boot. It cost $135,000 new, but with a 3.3-second sprint to 60 and a 205-mile per hour top end, was capable of keeping pace with the half-million Ferrari Enzo that wouldn't come out for another few years. Of course, with all that power driving the rear wheels and no electronic aids whatsoever, you'd have to be an F1 driver to keep it all under control.

The car traveled with Villeneuve as he contested the 1998 world championship to considerably less success, and, with 23,000 miles on the odometer, is now up for grabs in the UK with a £39,995 asking price - equivalent to $63k at today's conversion rates. Which may be worth it for the performance capabilities alone, never mind the provenance.

Wear a ponytail? Buy a Buick Verano

Buick Verano interior

With the launch of the $23,470 Buick Verano, General Motors has its work cut out in differentiating this luxury compact from its mass market sibling, the Chevrolet Cruze. Verano's price tag starts less than $500 above a top-of-the-line Cruze LTZ, but GM has a few arrows in its premium-product quiver to insure Verano doesn't come off as a badge-engineered baby Buick.

While we're more interested in the engine upgrade, which puts the 2.4-liter four-cylinder from the Buick Regal underhood, GM is touting the Verano's "1,000-hour" seats. They share leather, foam and padding with the top-of-the-line Buick LaCrosse, and are designed to prevent "hot spots" when driving long distances, says GM in a new press release. (The 1,000 hours GM refers to is the development time that went into the seats, not the duration you can sit in them before experiencing discomfort.)

The icing on the cake is that the Verano's seat head rests are "positioned to accommodate ponytails and other up-dos without compromising the occupants' postural comfort," says GM. Which, of course, makes us wonder whether we might someday see a Steven Seagal special edition Verano. Read the entire press release after the jump.

Dovizioso: Beating Pedrosa vital

Andrea Dovizioso said that beating Dani Pedrosa to the final podium spot at the Australian Grand Prix was a massive lift in his intra-team battle with the Spaniard for third place in the world championship. Dovizioso, who is leaving Honda for the Tech 3 Yamaha squad at the end of the season, saw Pedrosa cut the gap between the two in the standings from 53 points to one in the space of just four races. And Pedrosa looked set to overhaul the Italian for third spot in the points as the pair battled for the final podium position at Phillip Island.

Now Sixty-Six Percent More Practical! Volvo?s Five-Door C30 Hatchback Spied

Volvo’s C30 hatchback may be attractive and a decent value, but its packaging prioritizes style over function in a very un-Volvo way. Rennsport Trivia: Keys of the Gods Edition

Few historic racing cars are as immediately identifiable as the Porsche 917. MotoGP Silly Season Update: Marquez Announcement Imminent, Redding To Ride A Ducati?

Fears of a tiny grid in MotoGP for 2012 appear to be receding rapidly. As the countdown to next year approaches, the final slots on the grid - along with what may turn out to be a large number of CRT entries, as we reported earlier - are starting to fill up.

The burning question in the MotoGP paddock at the moment is whether Spanish prodigy Marc Marquez will move up to MotoGP from Moto2 next season. Speculation on the matter has been hectic, with negotiations being opened in earnest at the Aragon round of MotoGP, where Marquez' mentor and manager Emilio Alzamora told reporters that Marquez had little to gain from staying in Moto2. Since then, the situation has moved on, and as Spanish petroleum giant Repsol's plans for 2012 have been clarified, a switch to MotoGP is looking increasingly likely.
