Pescarolo duo claim title with win

Julien Jousse and Emmanuel Collard claimed the Le Mans Series LMP1 drivers' title for sportscar legend Henri Pescarolo's team in a thrilling six-hour race at Estoril. The French pair came out on top in a battle with championship rivals Andrea Belicchi and Jean-Christophe Boullion that lasted nearly the whole distance. The two cars were rarely separated by more than a handful of seconds until the very final stages

Leimer quickest in Jerez test

Fabio Leimer set the pace on the first day of GP2 testing at Jerez, topping the timesheets in both the morning and afternoon session for Racing Engineering. The 22-year-old, who finished 14th in this year's championship with the Rapax squad, set his best time of 1m27.282s in the morning session. That was just nine thousandths of a second faster than 2011 GP2 runner-up Luca Filippi, who completed the morning for Scuderia Coloni before handing over to Auto GP prize winner Kevin Ceccon.

King Dominates, Alfalla Crowned NiSWC Champion at PIR

Week 17 saw the drivers of the NASCAR iRacing.com Series World Championship (NiSWC) pay their annual visit to Phoenix International Raceway for the penultimate race of the season. It was apparent early in testing that this was going to be a wild and unpredictable race, but no one expected what happened Tuesday night. The race saw plenty of crashes and strategy, a first time winner and the crowning of a worthy champion. When the dust settled, it was not a series regular who took the checkered flag first. Instead, it was NASCAR iRacing.com Pro Series driver Kevin King who not only had the car to beat for most of the race but played the strategy perfectly as well. The path to the front for King was not a walk in [...]

Should Toyota's rumored Supra revival look like this?

Toyota Supra Rendering

The rumormill is churning full blast at the thought of a resurrected Toyota Supra, and while we don't have any more reliable information on whether or not Toyota will reintroduce the high-horsepower sports car, we have been treated to a rendering of what the vehicle might look like.

Artist Andreas Fougner took the time to stretch his skills over the notion of a Supra successor, and the result is the machine you see above. Fougner says that he drew his inspiration from both current and vintage Toyota models, as well as other vehicles that have made the jump from past to present while skipping a generation or two.

What's under the hood? Fougner hasn't bothered with specifics, though he did say that the modern Supra would need to be light and nimble, despite the vehicle's portly past, and that it should come with a high-revving, naturally aspirated beating heart. Forced induction would also be acceptable.

As for us, we wouldn't mind seeing a torque-happy straight six under that long hood, so long as it puts power to the rear wheels via an honest-to-God manual gearbox.

Vettel on verge of Rankings glory

The Castrol EDGE Rankings mirrored the 2011 Formula 1 World Championship at Singapore as victory carried Sebastian Vettel to the brink of early victory in both disciplines. A characteristically dominant performance under the lights of Singapore saw Vettel do everything but seal the 2011 F1 drivers' crown. Jenson Button is the only man still with a mathematical chance of taking the title following his second-place finish on the weekend, but in reality only disaster will prevent Vettel from taking his second straight title

Crumbling bridge chosen as symbol of decaying infrastructure

Sherman Minton Bridge

Indiana governor Mitch Daniels was forced to close the Sherman Minton Bridge over the Ohio River last week. The 50-year-old structure connects Indiana with Kentucky via Interstate 64, and after years of overuse, the bridge has deteriorated significantly.

Inspectors recently discovered a large crack in the main load-bearing element of the bridge, and structural engineers quickly recommended closing the structure to traffic. Before the closure, 75,000 vehicles flowed between Albany, Indiana and Louisville, Kentucky every day. Now those vehicles are being forced onto already over-crowded alternate routes.

The Sherman Minton Bridge has become a symbol of our nation's rapidly-deteriorating infrastructure (see also: I-35 bridge in Minneapolis), and President Barack Obama has used it as an example of exactly how America needs to focus on shoring up its innards. As a result, the president has unveiled the American Jobs Act - legislation designed to put people back to work while giving infrastructure the attention it's been lacking over the past four decades. Here's hoping it works.

Report: Renault heading back to the drawing board for new Laguna

Renault Laguna Coupe

It's been only four years since Renault launched its third-generation Laguna, and one year since the model underwent a facelift. But according to the latest reports the French automaker is getting ready to pull the plug and go back to the drawing board for an all-new replacement. And if our information proves accurate, that could lead to a new sports coupe as well.

The reason for the shift in strategy is that the Laguna just isn't standing up to the competition - namely the Ford Mondeo. So in order to mount a more substantial challenge, Renault is reportedly collaborating with its partner Nissan on a replacement.

It may be another few years before the Laguna IV (or whatever they choose to call it) is unveiled, but the new platform is reportedly also set to spawn a sportier coupe as well. Quite different in approach from the current Laguna Coupé (pictured above), the new sports model is said to be under development with direct input from Renaultsport - the performance division that's responsible for the company's lauded hot hatches. That bodes well for the coupe's sporting prospects, but whether it warrants the long-rumored revival of the Alpine brand remains to be seen.

Report: Actress Lake Bell adds automotive journalist to her portfolio

Filed under:

Lake Bell

We automotive journalists are a merry bunch. Friendly people for the most part, happy to do our jobs, though not necessarily the best-looking in any profession. But the latest addition to our ranks helps curve the grade, so to speak, by some measure.

You may recognize Lake Bell from No Strings Attached or from the Adult Swim comedy Childrens Hospital. Her latest movie, A Good Old Fashioned Orgy, just hit theaters, she's set to appear in the upcoming second season of HBO's How to Make It in America and just finished filming Black Rock. She's even directed her own short film called Worst Enemy that debuted at Sundance this year. And now she can add one more line to her résumé as she continues to write the automotive column for The Hollywood Reporter.

She credits her father - who just happens to own a couple of race tracks - with her love for cars, which have already helped her review cars like the Maserati GranTurismo, Porsche Panamera 4S, Jaguar XKR and Cadillac CTS-V Coupe. We think The Car Show may have just found their replacement for John Salley.

Honda unveils 2012 CBR1000RR Fireblade

2012 Honda CBR1000RR Firelbade

It's been 20 years since Honda first unleashed the CBR900RR on the unsuspecting world, and to mark the occasion, the manufacturer has unveiled the 2012 CBR1000RR Fireblade at the Endurance World Championship at Le Mans and the 2011 World Superbike Championship in Imola, Italy.

The new bike packs a revised fairing, complete with a fresh nose and reworked tail section, but the really fun bits are still under the plastic. Honda has implemented an all-new rear shock design with dual-tubes that supposedly offer a smoother and faster response over the old hardware. Up front, the CBR1000RR works with 43-millimeter telescopic front forks.

Engineers also reworked the engine's fuel-injection mapping for a smoother idle and easier operation lower in the rev band. A set of new gauges and two 12-spoke wheels wrap up the changes over the 2011 model. Hit the jump to check out the full press blast.

Red Bull Racing, Virgin and Mercedes GP fell foul of Formula 1's curfew regulations on Friday night after marketing personnel from the teams entered the Singapore track. F1's rules state that no 'team personnel who are associated in any way with the operation of the cars are permitted within the confines of the circuit' for a set period during the overnight hours. Report: Stock car racing comes to.... Antarctica?!

ACTC Stock Car Racing in Antarctica

Argentina has apparently brought stock car racing to Antarctica for the very first time. The Asociacion Corredores Turismo Carretera recently teamed up with the Argentina Air Force and the interior ministry to bring one racer to the frozen continent. Hugo Mazzacane, vice president of the racing organization, piloted the car down 3,937 feet of runway in temperatures of four degrees below zero, Fahrenheit. We aren't exactly sure of the motivations behind the stunt, but our Google Translator informs us that the trip had something to do with bringing renewed passports to those already stationed on Antarctica.

Then again, if you have to ask why, you probably shouldn't be anywhere near motorsports in the first place. There's no indication as to what kind of preparations were taken to ensure that the car could perform in the cold or what kind of driving suit Mazzacane had to don in order to keep from freezing himself out of the cockpit. Still, looks like a fun time to us.

The i30, for those not up on Hyundai’s Euro alphanumerics, is better known here as the Elantra Touring. If Hyundai chooses to continue offering an Elantra five-door in the U.S., this will be it. The i30 is [...]

Force India pushing to secure sixth

Force India pairing Paul di Resta and Adrian Sutil are refusing to become complacent despite Force India now holding the sixth place in the Constructors' Championship that it has targeted since the start of the season. The Silverstone-based team started the year with a car that was at heart an evolution of its 2010 machine, but ran a radically changed aerodynamic concept for the first time during practice for the Spanish Grand Prix.

Stoner Stands Firm on Indy

Stoner nails the reasons why Indy is a poor track. From MCN: The corners get tighter and tighter until you are almost stopped and then you have to get on the gas and exit. It doesn’t flow at all, each set of corners it muddles you up and then you go a little straight. I, [...]

Video: Epic trike racing blows our minds

Epic Trike Racing

Our history with the tricycle is somewhat spotty. The inherently unbalanced design is only associated with skinned knees and brushes with asphalt in our memories, but apparently not everyone had the same experience. A trio of daredevils have taken to slinging themselves down mountain passes on modified big-boy trikes with nothing but the soles of their shoes for deceleration. Judging by the footage after the jump, the crew can crest speeds of 55 miles per hour, blowing by traffic and generally abandoning all regard for their well-being in the process. We love it.

Now, we'd be derelict in our duties if we didn't mention that you'd have to be completely mental to try this on your own. If you do decide to take to public streets on a homemade trike, just don't tell the authorities we told you to do it. Hit the jump to see the insanity for yourself.

Report: Trademark filings suggests Audi RS5 Convertible imminent

Audi RS5 Cabriolet Patent Drawings

Audi apparently has a mind to turn out a convertible version of the RS5. A slew of patent drawings depicting the high-performance drop-top have made their way to the internet via our Spanish-speaking sister site.

Judging by the drawings, we can tell that the vehicle will have room for four occupants and use the same power electric folding soft top as both the A5 and S5. The rest of the vehicle wears the same facelifted garb as the new S5 unveiled at this year's Frankfurt Motor Show.

Under the hood, chances are buyers will see the same naturally aspirated 4.2-liter V8 found in the RS5 coupe. The kicking eight pot is good for 450 horsepower and 317 pound-feet of torque, and will likely be mated to the company's S-Tronic dual-clutch gearbox. As you may have guessed, all-wheel drive will be standard.

Thus far, Audi hasn't made mention of where the vehicle will debut or exactly which markets will get to enjoy the convertible heathen. Stay tuned.

Sending A Message: Honda Adds Two Japanese Wildcards At Motegi

The issue of Motegi continues to divide the paddock. Despite the Dorna-commissioned study finding no evidence of elevated radiation at Motegi, and the fact that the IAEA president recently declared the Fukushima Daiichi reactors were stable, many of the teams continue to fear the conditions in Japan, worrying that the radiation could still be a problem, and being particularly concerned over the prospect of further earthquakes, such as struck the region during the Indycar event being held in Motegi this weekend, without causing any damage to either the track or the stricken nuclear plant. Such has been the situation that IRTA has issued a letter to the teams in an attempt to reassure them, Autosport is reporting, promising to post daily updates of radiations levels throughout the weekend.
