GTI35.com celebrates Volkswagen hot hatch's anniversary with special tuner pack
Filed under: Aftermarket, Performance, Hatchback, Volkswagen
It's not unusual for an automaker to roll out a special anniversary model when the brand or a specific model celebrates a milestone. This Volkswagen doesn't come from Wolfsburg itself, though. Instead, an independent outfit bent on marking the 35th birthday of the Volkswagen Golf GTI is behind the effort.
Partnering with German tuning house Wunschel Sport, the website GTI35.com has outfitted the hopped-up Golf with a 50-horse boost to 260 hp, a body kit, lowered suspension, and 19-inch OZ Quaranta wheels on low-profile rubber. The result is a claimed half-second off the 0-100 km/h (62mph) sprint, now down to 6.4 seconds (as equipped with the DSG) and a top speed of 255 km/h (158 mph).
The titanium-colored aftermarket special also wears decals emulating a racing number, which is repeated on the keychain, parking sign and t-shirt that come along with the €32,800 package, which is also available as individual components. Follow the jump for the press release and check out the high-resolution images in the gallery below.

Land Rover gives the Evoque an extra set of wheels
Filed under: Etc., Land Rover
Automakers designing bicycles is nothing new. Sometimes they're radical departures on the age-old wheeled machine, and sometimes they're new takes on the same classic form. The latest appears to be the latter, but that doesn't make it any less desirable.
Designed by Land Rover's design team to compliment the Range Rover Evoque, this road bike consists of a carbon fiber frame crafted by Karbona using F1-derived technology. The aerodynamically-optimized frame is fitted with an integrated seat tube, alloy handle bars, a 20-gear Shimano Ultegra system, black chrome trim and leather saddle.
This truly is a Land Rover-badged vehicle with no hope of ever traveling off the beaten path.
What's more, the crossover used to transport it, naturally, comes extra. Details in the press release after the jump, with high-res images in the gallery below.

General Motors issues second quarter dividend on preferred stock
Filed under: GM, Earnings/Financials
There are two main categories of General Motors stock; common and preferred. The preferred stock costs more, but that added price tag comes with a few extra perks. For example, preferred stock represents ownership in the company, and those shares receive priority over common stock in the event of a liquidation. GM's pricier stock also appears to have another perk - quarterly dividends.
GM announced today that preferred shareholders will receive a dividend of 59 cents per share on June 1. Anyone who holds the shares by May 15, 2011 will have rights to the extra coin, which adds up to $59.4 million for the automaker. The dividend will be the second of the year, as The General shelled out another 65 cents per share in January. Hit the jump to look over GM's brief press release.

Final laps of 2011 Daytona 200 lead to controversy, Ducati's first victory [w/video]
While this year's Daytona 200 was a great day for Ducati and its 848 EVO, it left something to be desired for everyone else. The race was blighted by tire issues, a bad final-lap crash that the riders were lucky to walk away from and a controversy stemming from Ducati's win.
The controversy started with a red flag late in the race and a mandatory tire change for all riders. On the same lap, Ducati rider Jason DiSalvo blew a cylinder on his machine. Eventually, race officials decided to re-start around 3:30 and run the rest of the 200 as a 15-lap sprint to the finish. Besides angering fans who paid to see a 200-mile single race and would end up with 147 miles over two races, the delay allowed DiSalvo's team time to change his blown engine.
With permission from the AMA, DiSalvo was back in the race. In the final seconds of the all-out 15-lap sprint to the finish, DiSalvo passed Cory West on a draft to take the win. That wasn't the end, though. Since there had been a red flag, there was some confusion as to who should be crowned the victor.
There was talk of letting the results from the lap before the red flag stand. That would have meant the race ended with Josh Herrin out front, JD Beach in second and Jake Zemke third. Officials decided, however, that since the top six riders had crossed the line before the red flag fell and everyone else was still on the previous lap, the results from the 15-lap sprint would decide the winner.
That meant that Jason Di Salvo, who before the red flag was out of the race, was crowned race winner, followed by Cory West and Jake Zemke. The result was no doubt a great moment for Ducati and DiSalvo, but left the guys who were ahead before the red flag and the fans who saw a shortened race feeling understandably spurned.

Motegi MotoGP Round To Be Rescheduled After Japanese Quake
The catastrophic earthquake that hit northeastern Japan on March 11th caused devastation beyond comprehension to a large section of the Pacific nation, the tsunami the quake triggered adding further destruction. Even though the thoughts of everyone either involved in or following MotoGP were first and foremost with the nation of Japan and its people, they could not help but consider the fate of the Japanese Grand Prix, due to take place on April 24th.
The initial response of Dorna was the only sensible one: to wait and gather more information on the ground. As the scale of the devastation became clear, it became evident that racing would be impossible on the scheduled date. Dorna CEO Carmelo Ezpeleta told Mela Chercoles of Spanish sports daily AS that the decision lay in the hands of the Motegi circuit: "we will do what they ask us to do," Ezpeleta said.

Peeved Lamborghini owner destroys car with sledgehammer, others help
Filed under: Coupe, China, Etc., Lamborghini
Stop! Hammertime? Well, if you're the owner of this particular Lamborghini Gallardo, you're not saying stop, but "go, go, go!" According to reports, the happless Gallardo was purchased about six months ago by a resident of Qingdao, China. In his short period of ownership, the man has apparently had a few issues with the car.
In one instance, the Lamborghini wouldn't start, so the owner had it towed to the local dealer. Upon arrival at the service bay, the owner found that the car had been damaged in transit. No one would claim responsibility and the original non-starting issue still wasn't fixed.
The Gallardo owner attempted to escalate the issue within the Lamborghini family, ultimately trying to reach out to Lamborghini CEO Stephan Winkelmann. No response or solution has been offered so the owner has become decidedly frustrated. So frustrated, in fact, that he decided destroying his Lamborghini in public would be the best way to garner attention.
According to the report, the owner is trying to make a point that China is home to a growing number of individuals capable of purchasing luxury items. Companies realizes this and are making increased efforts to offer their products to the Chinese people. However, the Lamborghini owner believes that the Chinese people do not get the same level of service found in other markets. By smashing his Gallardo, he's certainly captured our attention.
By the way, a new Lamborghini Gallardo, which typically sells for $230,000 on up, retails for between $529,000 and $757,000 USD in China. Ouch. Thanks to everyone for the tips!

Review: 2011 GMC Acadia Denali
Filed under: Crossover, GMC, Reviews, Luxury
Expanding The Brand Beyond Trucks and SUVsThe Denali brand began as a luxury trim package for the 1998 GMC Yukon, whereupon it quickly became apparent that affluent buyers would pony up for big wheels and large quantities of chrome. In fact, the Denali was so successful that GM designers penned a new, bolder front end, rearranged some body panels and the more expensive Cadillac Escalade was born. Over the years, the Denali brand also migrated to the Sierra pickup, yet despite the brand's popularity, the growth inexplicably stopped there.
That's changed for 2011, as GMC has breathed new life into its Denali franchise with a high-rent Acadia. Does the long-successful brand have the staying power to move away from boxy SUVs and trucks in favor of a kinder, gentler crossover?
