Ecclestone doubts US will embrace F1

Bernie Ecclestone doubts that Formula 1 will become a big success in America even with two grands prix in the nation from 2013. The world championship returns to the United States next year after a four-season absence, racing at a new purpose-built course in Austin, Texas, where construction was recently restarted after financial and organisational issues

Exclusive: Autoblog's Top 100 Photographs of 2011

Filed under:

We are nearly at the end of 2011, and that means another 365 days of driving the latest cars and attending automotive events around the world. Of course, we constantly have our cameras at our sides so we can share everything with you, and we take a lot of pride in bringing you beautiful, high-res images of all the cars we come across, whether it's one that just debuted at an auto show or one that just spent a week in our garage.

As has become tradition here at Autoblog, we've spent the last few weeks going through our archive of images to select the very best photos that we captured with our own cameras from the last year. We've carefully chosen our favorite 100, which you can see in the gallery above. We've also included links to the article in which the image originally appeared, in case you want to see more photos of the car or event.

We hope you enjoy viewing the images as much as we did taking them and putting them together. If you want to see our favorite images from previous years, you can view our galleries from 2010, 2009 and 2008. Enjoy!

Yamaha Loses Petronas MotoGP Sponsorship

Yamaha have suffered a costly blow to their MotoGP program. Today, the factory Yamaha team announced that the three-year deal with Malaysian oil giant Petronas to sponsor Yamaha's MotoGP team will not be extended, and will terminate at the end of 2011. In a joint press release issued with Petronas, Yamaha stated that after three successful years, the agreement had "reached its natural conclusion."

The announcement is very bad news indeed for Yamaha. The deal was reportedly worth $8 million a year for the Japanese factory, and coming on top of the loss of Fiat as a title sponsor at the end of 2010, Yamaha is currently being forced to fund a much greater part of its MotoGP budget - thought to be between 50 and 70 million euros a year - out of its own pocket, a situation that is not sustainable in the current economic climate. The factory seized the opportunity offered by its 50th anniversary in racing to run in factory colors for 2011, which was very well received, especially when the team ran the red-and-white livery that was such a massive hit with the fans. No such anniversary looms for 2012, and with motorcycle sales still in a downward spiral, and no sign of recovery in the global economy, the cost of racing in MotoGP could be too much to sustain for Yamaha.

Report: Fiat 500, Chevy Volt listed among biggest product flops of 2011... but should they be?

Fiat 500c

Chevrolet Volt'Tis the season for thin news cycles and cheesy top ten lists. Yahoo! Finance has thrown its hat in the top ten ring with its list of the biggest flops among all consumer goods introduced for 2011. Both the Fiat 500 and Chevrolet Volt have made it among the chosen few, rubbing elbows with such luminaries as Netflix's Qwikster and Disney's Mars Needs Moms.

Why the Volt? Yahoo! points to the vehicle's underwhelming sales, National Highway Traffic Safety Administration fire investigation and misguided General Motors executives as indicators of the plug-in hybrid's failure. We think that's a bit harsh given the fact that the Volt wasn't on sale across the country for most of the year, and we've harped on how absurd the NHTSA fire issue is in the past, so we'll save the digital ink here.

And what of the Fiat 500? It's no secret the adorable Italian hatchback has missed its sales goals by a country mile. While Chrysler had hoped to move 50,000 models this year, actual U.S. sales for the year will probably end up around 20,000 units, which really isn't too bad. Those early sales targets were picked straight from the crazy buffet to begin with, and the fact that the 500 suffered production delays, dealership network woes and a botched marketing effort didn't help matters. Still, do those issues make the 500 one of the biggest product flops of 2011?

For our money, it's too early to call either of these vehicles flops - moving 20,000 relatively expensive very small cars for a new-to-the-U.S. (well, "new again," at least) brand doesn't sound too bad to us, and putting the Volt on the list when it wasn't available to most consumers strikes us as Yahoo! Finance trolling for controversy. What say you? Drop us a line in Comments...

IndyCar wants more team co-operation

IndyCar officials have said that they expect more co-operation from teams and drivers in testing to ensure that they have a full understanding of how cars behave in pack conditions in order to avoid a repeat of Dan Wheldon's fatal crash at Las Vegas. Speaking at today's announcement of the initial findings from the investigation into the accident that claimed the life of Wheldon in October, IndyCar president of operations Brian Barnhart said that understanding how the cars functioned in race conditions was critical in restricting the opportunity for similar accidents in the future. "I think it is one of the byproducts to come out of this is that [teams will] have a better understanding of the request and requirements that we are expecting," Barnhart said.

Official: Hennessey rolls out 800-hp twin-turbo Jeep Grand Cherokee

Hennessey HPE800 Twin-Turbo Jeep

Eight-hundred horsepower. 0-60 in 3.1 seconds. $235,000. Given those numbers, you'd think we were talking about a supercar, right? Well we are, if by supercar you mean something with otherworldly performance capabilities. But this is no two-seat roadster. This is a Jeep.

To be more specific, this is the latest Hennessey HPE800 Twin Turbo, a new rocket sled based on the Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8. That model usually packs a 6.4-liter Hemi V8 - which is already big by any measure - but Hennessey's bored it out to a nice round 7.0 liters and bolted a pair of turbochargers to it.

Along with the substantial engine mods, the HPE800 also gets an upgraded transmission and torque converted (it is a conventional automatic, after all), plus 20-inch wheels on a lowered suspension with 15.1-inch Brembo brakes, and a reworked fascia with a carbon fiber splitter up front.

Of course, if the high price of entry doesn't keep out the riffraff, the limited quantities being built surely will: only 24 examples are earmarked for production, so even at the pace at which these beasts will cover all manner of terrain, they're not likely to run into one another once they've left the factory. Press release after the jump.

AOL Autos 2012 Car of the Year

AOL Autos 2012 Truck of the YearAOL Autos, sibling channel to Autoblog, has chosen a Car of the Year and Truck of the Year for the first time.

Editor-in-Chief David Kiley dubbed the awards, "Editors' Choice Awards", reflecting the fact that the selections were made by polling AOL Editors for their nominations. Their choices were discussed and consolidated with winners and three runners up per category.

Autoblog editors and staff did not participate in voting.

"Since we test just about every vehicle on the market, and certainly all the newly designed vehicles that come out, I felt like we should assert our collective opinion into the mix," said Kiley.

"This was a very good year for cars, which made it tough, but not a great year for eligible SUVs and trucks. But I feel really strongly about the choices we made; that both vehicles could win in any year," said Kiley.

To see the winners and runner-ups, click here. And please, argue the selections in the comment areas.

The Amazing Disappearing State Gas Tax

The Missouri Department of Transportation wants to widen I-70 between St. Louis and Kansas City. But as we’ve been reporting, many state DOTs just don’t have the money for major highway expansions anymore — and Missouri is no exception.
Inflation and improved fuel economy will quickly wipe out the added revenue from a proposed increase in [...]

Facing hybrid mid-sizers from every major competitor, Mercedes-Benz gets on board. Mercedes-Benz must like variety. It refuses to adhere to a single way of building fuel-efficient cars. The Chrysanthemum and the Sword

Talking to a colleague the other day, we came to a frank discussion about how the European motorcycle brands weathered the recession better when compared to their Japanese counterparts. While there are many factors at play in this statement, there is at least a component of truth to the idea that strong brand integration helped spur the Europeans into setting record months, quarters, and years during a global economic downturn, while companies like Honda, Kawasaki, ...

First Drive: 2012 Volkswagen Up! [w/video]

VW Finally Rediscovers Its (Very) Small Car Roots

Big old Volkswagen is back to thinking small, and it's finally doing it right. After two frankly awful attempts at supplying the rest of the world with cheap tin boxes called Fox and Lupo, company bosses have done some soul searching and this is the result: a tiny road warrior that's absolutely worthy of the 6.3-inch wide emblem on its grill.

It might seem like only yesterday, but the Up! was first shown as a concept back in the pre-crisis days of 2007 at the Frankfurt Motor Show. Talk about fortuitous timing, because this 2+2 three-door minicar is exactly the sort of car that much of economically stunned Europe is craving nowadays. We all, Euro or Yank, want as much premium feel in our cars as cheaply as possible, and this is exactly why the little Up! is destined to clobber The Continent's vast field of city cars.

We've just spent 12 days in a top-trim Up! White Edition driving around in what certainly will be one of the car's major markets: the piratical, everyone-for-themselves streets of Milan, Italy. With our American brainset, at first we thought, "Yeah, it's really cute and useful, well built and all, but..." That qualifying "but" was just because the Up! is so small in every dimension save front seat room. As we would come to learn over our dozen days, with an all-new 1.0-liter, 74-horsepower three-cylinder and a serviceable five-speed manual, this little bugger can be a little roll-y in tight curves taken with any spirit, but she sure is fun.

Bautista has pins removed from leg

Alvaro Bautista has undergone successful surgery to remove the pins that were placed in his left leg after his accident in Qatar at the start of the year. The Spaniard broke his leg in a practice crash, and though he only missed one other race before returning at Estoril, the after-effects of the injury troubled him for much of the year. On Wednesday Dr Angel Villamor removed the pins from Bautista's femur in an operation at Madrid's USP San Jose

Buick Encore teaser image

Last week, General Motors gave us our first glimpse at the 2013 Buick Encore, the Tri-Shield brand's new small crossover that will debut at the Detroit Auto Show in just a few weeks. Now, to continue the slow striptease process, Buick has released the first of four images on its Facebook page, with the whole image to be complete on the morning of January 10 (the second day of the Detroit Show festivities).

Details about the new Encore are slim, with GM still holding off on officially revealing any specific specs. For now, we only know that the Encore will have a "host of features and amenities customers expect from Buicks today." How this all works into a small CUV package remains to be seen, but consider us intrigued. We'll have the full scoop in just a few weeks.

Teased: Ford teases next EcoSport ahead of New Delhi

Ford EcoSport Teaser

While we're gearing up for the 2012 Detroit Auto Show next month, Ford is getting read to take on the Delhi Auto Expo with a gamut of production and concept vehicles. The company has released a teaser for what is likely the company's next EcoSport CUV to stir up interest.

The second-generation production vehicle is likely based on the same platform as the Ford Fiesta (the outgoing EcoSport is based on Ford's foreign market Fusion crossover) and will make its way around the globe in select markets as part of the automaker's "One Ford" strategy. That means European buyers will get a shot at taking home an EcoSport of their own, though we don't expect the model to show up on our shores anytime soon.

Ford will also show off the company's Figo, Fiesta, Ford Classic and Endeavour to the Indian market. The Delhi Auto Expo kicks off on January 7 and runs through January 11. Hit the jump for the full press release.
