Another Oil Sponsor Joins MotoGP: Bel-Ray Backs Aspar For 2012

After the news two days ago that ENEOS is to be backing Yamaha's MotoGP squad, more good news on the sponsorship front. Bel-Ray, manufacturer of a range of automotive lubrication products, today announced that they will be expanding their presence in the MotoGP paddock by backing Team Aspar's efforts in all three classes of MotoGP. The US oil producer will be supplying a range of products for the Aspar team to use in MotoGP, Moto2 and Moto3.

The move sees Bel-Ray expanding its sponsorship activities in international motorcycle racing. After starting off in 2011, supporting the Tech 3 Moto2 team, Bel-Ray has added support for Carlos Checa's Althea Ducati squad for the 2012 World Superbike season, as well as the complete Aspar line up. The sponsorship arrangement is also a positive sign for both the Moto2 and Moto3 classes, where it has been possible to attract sponsorship from a company selling lubricants despite the fact that the regulations impose a single supplier of engine oil on the class.

2012 MotoGP Season To Kick Off With Ducati's Annual 'Wrooom' Press Launch

From Monday, a select group of the world's print and TV media will assemble at the Italian ski resort of Madonna di Campiglio to attend Wrooom 2012, the annual press launch of Ducati's MotoGP project and Ferrari's Formula One assault. The junket, funded by the Italian arm of tobacco giant Phillip Morris, starts on Monday and culminates on Friday in an exhibition race where Ferrari's F1 drivers take on Ducati's MotoGP riders (minus the injured Nicky Hayden, in all probability) in a kart race held on an ice rink in the heart of the Italian ski resort. The week features a series of events (full details on the special Wrooom website), including a chance for the fans to meet Nicky Hayden and Valentino Rossi at 5:30pm on Tuesday, and the presentation of Ducati's 2012 Desmosedici GP12.

Racing the Plan

I get up every morning just like most people and I have a plan. That plan is carried-out based on the events of the day, what I have to do and when I have to have it done. Now, I can see that funny look on your face already, one that says “What does this have to do with iRacing?” What this has to do with iRacing is this: It?s all about management. We manage tasks in our daily lives. We know when to give a task everything we have and when giving a task a little less is enough. Sim racing is no different. iRacing has advanced in so many ways that we are now forced to manage our resources during a race. We have to think about when [...]

World Superbikes In 2012: 22 Riders, 6 Makes, And A Gaggle Of Contenders

Despite the loss of the factory Yamaha team, the World Superbike series is still in relatively good health, considering the financial crisis. Though the days of 30+ rider grids are gone, grid size has stabilized at around the 22 rider mark, 1 up from last year, while there are still 6 manufacturers present, Aprilia, BMW, Ducati and Kawasaki in an official capacity, Honda unofficially via Ten Kate, and Suzuki absent, with Crescent working with Yoshimura on their own bikes.

The field has seen some changes, though most of the title favorites are staying with the teams they were with in 2011. Carlos Checa remains with Althea Ducati, though the effort expands to include 2011 Superstock champ Davide Giugliano, while Max Biaggi is in the second year of his 2-year contract with Aprilia, and Johnny Rea is staying with the Ten Kate Honda squad. Championship runner up Marco Melandri has been forced to move, joining Leon Haslam at BMW, while his erstwhile teammate Eugene Laverty has been paired with Biaggi in the factory Aprilia squad. The factory Kawasaki rider contingent is cut from 3 to 2, Chris Vermeulen losing his slot, while Tom Sykes remains alongside Joan Lascorz.

Report: SF luxury car-sharing service shuttered after falling victim to theft ring

HiGear model with BMW M3 convertible

HiGear was a peer-to-peer car rental service that began in San Francisco six months ago, had opened up shop in Los Angeles, and was in the process of expanding to to other West Coast cities. Specializing in luxury cars under $100,000, members offered their cars up for rental to other locals at rather excellent rates. Cars above six figures were included after being vetted by the service - members were vetted as well - and the service provided comprehensive insurance to protect owners and renters.

According to TechCrunch, that apparently didn't stop a car-theft ring from targeting HiGear and making off with four cars worth between $300,000 and $400,000. The thieves created verifiable identities and paid with stolen credit cards, bypassing all of HiGear's safeguards. So as of January 3, 2012 HiGear was forced to shut down, citing untenable costs due to the thefts.

It's a shame, since the peer-to-peer social-networking nature of the service meant that you could rent cars you'd be severely challenged to find as easily anywhere else: a 1971 Eldorado could be had for $100 a day, a 1955 Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud was $300, and a 2006 Bentley Flying Spur was $400. Although this idea didn't survive, we hope this isn't the last we hear of HiGear CEO Ali Moiz.

Video: Scion FR-S turbo spotted testing at Laguna Seca

Turbocharged Scion FR-S

It looks as if Scion may be hard at work on a new turbocharged FR-S prototype. Motor Trend nabbed a quick video of what appears to be a forced-induction version of the coupe darting around Laguna Seca. With its tall wing and sideways antics, the vehicle is likely being put through its paces by the Scion drift team, which has had to rely on specially modified TC models until now. It makes sense for the drift team to strap a turbo onto the vehicle's 2.0-liter flat four for a little extra grunt, but it's unclear if a forced-induction version of the FR-S will make its way to production.

If a hotter version of the coupe is coming down the pike, we'll have to wait for it. The first production FR-S models won't show up until summer, and any variations would trail along after that. Either way, it appears we should be able to catch a glimpse of high-performance FR-S on the Formula D circuit in no time. Hit the jump to watch the quick video for yourself.

From Randy Mamola’s column for Alpinestars: I talked to Lorenzo?s crew chief Ramon Forcada after the race about the choice to run the softer front tire and he said it was Jorge?s call after morning warm-up, as he did a good run of low 1:57?s on a tire that had 25 laps on it and [...]

Kronos to scale back IRC programme

Kronos Racing will scale back its involvement in the Intercontinental Rally Challenge next year and instead focus on developing a new car for the 2013 season. The Belgian squad won the 2008 and '09 drivers' titles with Nicolas Vouilloz and Kris Meeke in Peugeot 207 S2000s and also guided Sebastien Loeb to the '06 World Rally Championship crown in a Citroen Xsara WRC.

Vilner Mercedes-Benz Vito

If you're looking to turn your Mercedes-Benz Vito into an executive-class van, Vilner has what you need. The company used its expertise on the German minivan to craft an interior inspired by private jets. With Nappa leather seating, an Alcantara headliner and mahogany details spread throughout the cabin, the Vilner Vito is suitably deluxe. Additional power outlets make it perfect for long-distance chauffeured travel, while a 19-inch LCD display and stocked mini fridge help keep passengers entertained..

Mechanically, the Vilner Vito is identical to the stock model, though new alloy wheels take the place of the stock rollers. A set of bi-xenon headlights are part of the package as well. How much will the conversion cost you? If you have to ask...

Hit the jump for the brief press release.

If that?s the source, our first trip to the test track with a Hyundai Veloster suggests that the name was invented by someone drawing inspiration from the uninhibited sheet metal and [...]
