2013 Ford Taurus gets 2.0L EcoBoost four, styling tweaks [w/video]
Filed under: New York Auto Show, Sedan, Ford
Upon taking the wraps off of the 2013 Ford Taurus, Derrick Kuzak, the automaker's group vice president of global product development, said the styling tweaks were wholly influenced by the new Audi A6. Sure, the new front fascia and LED square around the taillamps are total Audi knock-offs, but what's important to learn from this is that Ford is using the A6 as its target for the Taurus, and with a host of updates for the 2013 model year, Ford's flagship gets one step closer to being an Audi alternative.
All in, the design tweaks give the Taurus an added sense of aggressiveness, though the car is still immediately recognizable as a successor to the all-new flagship that debuted for the 2010 model year. The trapezoidal grille has been tweaked, and now features active air shutters to improve overall fuel economy. The hood has been fully resculpted, and out back, tweaked taillamps with LED running lights blend into a slightly revised rear fascia. Dual exhaust tips are now standard across the board, as are new 20-inch wheel options.
The big enhancements for 2013 are the Taurus' powertrains. Ford's trusty 3.5-liter V6 still serves as the base engine, though its output has been bumped up to 290 horsepower - a full 27 more horses than the outgoing car. New for 2013, though, is the addition of the automaker's 2.0-liter EcoBoost four-cylinder engine, rated at 237 horsepower and 250 pound-feet of torque. With the EcoBoost engine underhood, the Taurus is estimated to achieve up to 31 miles per gallon on the highway.
Inside, there's a new steering wheel and more soft-touch materials have been added to the dash and center console, which now uses the automaker's MyFord Touch infotainment system. Other new enhancements include the addition of Ford's curve control system - first seen on the Explorer - that enhances cornering capability and braking control. Speaking of brakes, the Taurus also gets a larger brake master cylinder, meaning braking feel should be substantially better.
Pricing will be announced closer to the car's on-sale date in early 2012, and while the 2013 Taurus might not be a perfect competitor to Audi's A6, it's sure to offer similar content (and style) at a much lower price-point. Check out all the details for yourself in the press release after the jump, as well as some B-roll footage of the new car. We'll have plenty of live photos and impressions from the car's official New York Auto Show debut, as well.

Buick Envision Concept touches down in Shanghai
Filed under: Concept Cars, China, Crossover, Buick, Shanghai Motor Show
General Motors has rolled out a new hybrid SUV concept that's custom tailored for the Chinese market. The Buick Envision SUV Concept rolls together the future of the Tri-Shield's design language with a fuel-efficient drivetrain to give us all an idea of where brand is headed in the near future. Worked up as a joint venture between Shanghai GM and the Pan Asia Technical Automotive Center, the Envision borrows the same waterfall grille found on the company's current stable of products and mixes in a host of angles and curves.
Regardless of whether or not the exterior leaves you cold, plug-in hybrid fans are likely to find something to smile about under the hood. The Envision uses a 2.0-liter direct-injection gasoline engine coupled to two electric motors and an eight-speed automatic gearbox. Power is stored in a lithium-ion battery and the vehicle's roof wears a solar cell to help recuperate some power.
With a fully-carbon fiber chassis and an intelligent solar charging system, we don't exactly expect the Envision to roll onto dealer lots any time soon. Hit the jump for the full press blast.

Review: 2011 Chrysler 300 V6
Filed under: Sedan, Chrysler, Reviews, Luxury
The Big American Sedan Is Alive And WellOf the many hurtful similes one can hurl at a vehicle, few are more insidious than drawing design or driving parallels to the oft-maligned American sedan. Thanks to the dark days of the '70s and '80s, once proud nameplates like Imperial, Impala and Galaxie were either completely forgotten or bastardized into models with about as much personality as a tube sock. Whether you blame it on oil prices, safety standards or the popularity of disco and cocaine, there's no denying that the domestic four-door suffered a major fall from grace.
Now, General Motors, Ford and Chrysler are all fighting tooth and nail to establish their products as capable of besting metal from Japan, Germany and Korea. While that's largely translated into a fleet of mid-sized sedans with soap-bar aesthetics and front-wheel-drive architectures, the 2011 Chrysler 300 is hell-bent on continuing to buck that trend.
With its rear-wheel-drive configuration and stylish lines, the four-door strives to draw connections to the Pentastar's more successful past - to an era long before corporate take-overs and the K-car. Is it successful?

BMW considering range extender for future EVs
During today's Innovation Day presentation in Munich, BMW's head of electrical components, Dr. Christian Schmidt, revealed that the automaker is considering adding a range extending engine to its future electric vehicles.
BMW has maintained from the beginning that its recently announced "i" program will include a variety of drivetrains, ranging from the current mild hybrid fitted to the 7 Series AcriveHybrid to a full EV in the form of the i3. A plug-in hybrid will be employed on the i8, with an internal combustion engine mounted amidships and two electric motors - one driving the rear wheels and another up front - allowing the i8 to run on electric power alone or use the combination of the ICE and electric motors to boost performance.
However, the possible implementation of an EV fitted with a range-extending motor (a la Chevrolet Volt) would allow drivers to run on electric power alone for short drives, with the range extending engine kicking in to feed the battery for longer drives.
Schmidt wouldn't elaborate on what vehicles could benefit from a range extender, but was quick to point out that during the Mini E evaluations, range complaints were minimal. However, each consumer's needs are different and a range extended hybrid is likely to be another cog in BMW's i Mobility plans.

New Buick "brand anthem" ad breaks during NCAA Final Four
Filed under: Sedan, Performance, Marketing/Advertising, Videos, Buick, Luxury
This weekend, Buick is introducing a new ad the company calls its "brand anthem." Car companies do this once in a while. It's almost always a 60-second TV spot meant to illustrate a new idea of what the brand represents.
In Buick's case, its new anthem, to paraphrase, is "luxury for regular folks." The actual message the ad carries is, "Your Kind of Luxury." Buick says this is not a permanent tagline or slogan, but that it is dropping "The New Class of World Class," which it's been using as a tag for more than a year. The brand will go without a consistent slogan in future.
Buick is the brand that, more than any other, is trying to tell the public that times have changed. "Quiet" luxury is in, the marketers say. Buick ad chief Craig Bierley says that Buick is going back to its image roots established in the 1950s and 60s. He describes Buick in those years as the perfect car for the doctor who made house calls. If the doc drove a Cadillac, he would be saying that his rates were to high, Bierley explained. If he drove a Chevy or Dodge, he wasn't successful enough. Buick conveys authority and taste without showing off.
Buick is a big sponsor of the NCAA Men' Basketball Tournament. In many ways, it's the perfect marketing vehicle for Buick, reaching young sports fans as well as the older ones who are watching their alma maters compete in the Final Four. If they have alma maters, they're college educated. If they're college educated, it figures they have money to spend.
Buick buyers' average age is in the low 60s, a nice drop from 70s, which it was in 2009.
Cadillac, the Buick marketers tell us, is for people who like to show off their success. Buick is for the successful person with a more understated lifestyle. In other words, Caddy is the brand for the college hoops stars who are going pro. Buick is for the people who buy the tickets. Check out the new spot after the jump.
